Kissing: the good, the bad and the ugly

Kissing Explained
A first kiss should always be done while the two of you are alone. This will help to avoid any unnecessary nervousness and embarrassing situations. The best type of kiss is one that uses different variations... such as starting with a small kiss, working into a French Kiss, maybe sucking on your partner's upper or lower lip...
And don't just leave kisses to the lips. Kiss their cheeks, their chin or their eyelids. This can be very seductive and romantic.

Basic Kissing Tips
Great Breath - This is very important. Make sure you brush your teeth before going out on your date. There is nothing worse than kissing someone with bad breath. If your date consists of having something to eat before the actual kiss, make sure you have a mint on hand to take right after you finish eating. Don't take the mint just before the kiss or chew on gum. You don't want to have something in your mouth when you kiss.

Moist Lips - You want your lips to be slightly moist when you kiss. Run your tongue over your lips once before you kiss. Don't wear lip gloss because that tends to make the kiss too gooey. And don't wear a lot of lipstick unless you want your partner to wear it too after the kiss. Slightly moist lips makes it easier to move your lips over your partner's and gives both you and your partner a more pleasant experience.

Positioning - Stand close to your partner. As the two of you move closer together tilt your head slightly. If you can see which way your partner's head is tilting, tilt your head slightly in the opposite direction.

Close Eyes - Just before your lips meet, close your eyes. Some people prefer to leave their eyes open during the kiss. But until you know what your partner prefers, it is best to close your eyes.

Open Lips - Open your mouth slightly and place your lips over your partner's lips. Do not hold your breath! Breath through your nose. As your lips meet, press them gently over your partner's. You may wish to move your lips in a slow, circular motion or just leave them still over your partners.

Closed Lips - This is like the type of kiss you'd give your grandma or aunt. Instead of opening your mouth when your lips meet, keep them closed. This is also a good way of letting your partner know this is as far as it goes. It also makes a great hello/good-bye kiss or a great first time kiss if you're nervous.

French Kissing
This is the most popular type of kiss. This involves touching your tongue with your partner's and it can be quite a pleasant experience. There are a few tips to create a great french kiss.

Open Lips - Open your lips over your partner's slightly more than you would during a regular kiss. This makes it easier to place your tongue in your partner's mouth.

Tongue - Place the tip of your tongue on the tip of your partner's tongue. Do not force your tongue too far into their mouth. If you wish, you can play with their tongue by circling theirs with your own. Have fun with it. Explore.

Lips - You may explore different ways of using your tongue. Try running the tip of your tongue over your partner's lips. Do this slowly and gently, just using the tip of your tongue.

Suck Kissing

This can be a very seductive type of kiss. Instead of French Kissing with your mouth open, while your partner's lips are parted suck on their top our bottom lip with your own, just for a second or two. Then go back to another type of kiss or try the other lip.

Nip Kissing

This type of kiss has to be done carefully, but when done correctly can create a wonderful effect on your date. While suck kissing, gently bite their lip, but be VERY gentle so as not to hurt your date / partner. This kiss should only be done with someone that you've kissed a few times before, otherwise you may shock your partner.

Surprise Kissing

This type of kiss is done when your partner is lying down on a sofa or the ground, either asleep or just lying with their eyes closed. Quietly approach your partner and place a small, very gentle kiss on their lips. Intensify the kiss until your partner opens their eyes or awakens.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fresh breath is essential. Avoid smelly foods (garlic, brie cheese, corn chips, coffee) beforehand. Freshen up with a mint or

gum, making sure to dispose of the gum before kissing.
  • Some people find it helpful to practice French kissing on ice cream. It's a chilly but effective way to practice tongue flickers.
  • Read your date's body language to ensure a French kiss would be welcomed. Holding hands and gentle brush-ups during the date are good signs.
  • There is no single right way to French kiss. Kissing is as individual as the people doing it. The most important thing is to be true to yourself, your date and the moment.
  • French kissing can quickly unleash passions. Know your limits beforehand and be prepared to put the other person on hold when you reach them.
  • French kissing improves with practice. Don't be dismayed if your first time French kiss fails to ignite fireworks. Practice makes perfect.
  • Don't shove your whole tongue in the other person's mouth, it's not a pleasant experience

The Backstory of Black July 1983 and its Aftermath

"உயிர்வாழ விரும்பினால்
- நீ உனக்கென ஒருதேசம் சமைத்திடு
என்று உறைப்பாக உணர்தியது எண்பத்து மூன்று"

The events of July 1983 are poignant for the entire Tamil population around the world. Between July 24 and 29, Tamils were systematically targeted with violence in Colombo and many other parts of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Governments officials categorized the violence as uncontrollable race riots instigated by the killing of 13 Sinhala soldiers on the night of July 23. However, history and the course of events during Black July illustrate the Sri Lankan Government’s undeniable involvement in the genocidal acts against Tamils.

Tamil properties go up in pilams

July 24 (Day 1): At 1 o’clock in the morning of July 24, the army rounded up hundreds of Tamils in Trincomalee, Mannar, and Vavuniya in the Northeast who had fled the anti-Tamil riots of 1977 and 1981. These Tamils were forcibly taken and left without possessions in the central hills.

Before the riots broke out in Colombo, the army in Jaffna went on rampage killing 51 innocent Tamil civilians. In Trincomalee, similar violence broke out as members of the Navy randomly shot at civilians and burnt down Tamil property.

In the evening in Colombo, the state funeral was being organized for the soldiers. Thousands of people arrived at the cemetery but the bodies failed to appear. After waiting several hours, much of the crowd objecting the burial in Kanatte and demanded the bodies to be returned to the next of kin. As the large crowd began to leave the grave, a new group of people (identified as government gangs) entered the Borella junction and raised anti–Tamil cries. As the anti-government cry subsided and anti-Tamil cries became dominant, arson and murdering of Tamils broke out.

July 25 (Day 2): After the midnight lull, mobs were led by people with voter registration lists in hand torched Tamil homes, looted and destroyed Tamil businesses. All traffic was searched, and any Tamils found were killed, maimed, or burned alive. Cyril Matthew, Minister of Industries, was witnessed directly pinpointing shops to be burned down.

Many policemen were deployed throughout the city; however, they tacitly stood and watched on. Witnesses recall lorry loads of armed troops leisurely waving to looters who waved greetings back. Curfew was only declared by the President late in afternoon after the worst was over. However, the violence continued unabated. Tens of thousands of Tamils who were homeless, sought refugee in schools and places of worship.

In Welikade prison, 35 Tamil political prisoners who were awaiting trail under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, were massacred by Sinhalese prisoners with the complicity of jail guards using spikes, clubs and iron rods.

The violence spread rapidly throughout the country, engulfing towns like Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Trincomalee. One town was completely wiped out - the Indian Tamil town of Kandapola, near Nuwara Eliya.

July 26 (Day 3): Government imposed a strict censorship of media reporting on the anti-Tamil violence. Word spread of Sri Lanka’s state of disorder as eye witness accounts and photographs taken by returning tourists illustrated the scale of violence. They described how Tamil motorists were dragged out of their vehicles and hacked to pieces while others were drenched with petrol and set alight in full view of the security forces. The International Airport in Colombo was closed.

July 27 (Day 4): 17 more prisoners at Welikade Prison were hacked to death just two days after the prison massacre. The surviving 36 prisoners are transferred to other prisons. Rioting continued and the curfew is extended. Witnesses of the violence reported that charred corpses of Tamil victims lined the streets of Colombo, some mutilated with X’s.

July 28 (Day 5): President J.R. Jayewardene addressed the nation for the first time since the anti-Tamil pogroms, only to fan the flames of anti-Tamil sentiments by stating that anyone who advocated for separatism would lose all their “civic rights”. He states, He states, “….the time has now come to accede to the clamour and natural request of the Sinhala people to prevent the country from being divided.” Vigilantes set up make-shift roadblocks in villages across the island, searched cars and buses for Tamil passengers. In one incident, a Sinhalese mob burnt to death about 20 Tamils on a minibus as European tourists look on in horror.

July 29 (Day 6): Tamils in Colombo began evacuating by cargo ship to the Northern city of Jaffna. Hundreds more internally displaced persons waited anxiously for the next cargo ship to transport them to Jaffna.

July 30 (Day 7): Violence began to dissipate. There was an extreme food shortage in Colombo and across the island as a result of the week long violence.

How To Do a Breast Self Exam (BSE) & Tips And Tricks

Breast self examination (BSE) is to be performed each month in addition to an annual mammogram or a clinical exam. Knowing your cyclical changes, what is normal for you, and what regular monthly changes in the breast feel like is the best way to keep an eye on your breast health. Breast tissue extends from under your nipple and areola up toward your armpit.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 15 minutes a month

What You Need:

  • A mirror which lets you see both breasts
  • A pillow for your head and shoulders
  • Privacy
(Photo Courtesy of National Cancer Institute)

1. Make a regular date for your BSE

If you are pre-menopausal: Set a regular time to examine your breasts a few days after your period ends, when hormone levels are relatively stable and breasts are less tender.

If you are already menopausal (have not had a period for a year or more): Pick a particular day of the month to do the exam, and then repeat your BSE on that day each month.

2. Visual Exam - Hands on Hips

In the privacy of your bathroom, strip to the waist and stand before a mirror. You will need to see both breasts at the same time. Stand with your hands on your hips and check the appearance of your breasts. Look at size, shape, and contour. Note changes, if any, in the skin color or texture. Look at the nipples and areolas, to see how healthy they look.

3. Visual Exam - Arms Over Your Head

Still standing in front of the mirror, raise your arms over your head and see if your breasts move in the same way, and note any differences. Look at size, shape, and drape, checking for symmetry. Pay attention to your nipples and areolas, to see if you have any dimples, bumps, or retraction (indentation). Look up toward your armpits and note if there is any swelling where your lymph nodes are (lower armpit area).

4. Manual Exam - Stand and Stroke

Raise your left arm overhead, and use your right-hand fingers to apply gentle pressure to the left breast. Stroke from the top to the bottom of the breast, moving across from the inside of the breast all the way into your armpit area. You can also use a circular motion, being sure to cover the entire breast area. Take note of any changes in texture, color, or size. Switch sides and repeat. This is best done in the shower, as wet skin will have the least resistance to the friction of your fingers.

5. Manual Exam - Check Your Nipples

Still facing the mirror, lower both arms. With the index and middle fingers of your right hand, gently squeeze the left nipple and pull forward. Does the nipple spring back into place? Does it pull back into the breast? Note whether or not any fluid leaks out. Reverse your hands and check the right nipple in the same way.

6. Manual Exam - Recline and Stroke

This is best done in your bedroom, where you can lie down. Place a pillow on the bed so that you can lie with both your head and shoulders on the pillow. Lie down and put your left hand behind your head. Use your right hand to stroke the breast and underarm, as you did in step 4. Take note of any changes in texture, color, or size. Switch sides and repeat.

7. Tips For Doing Your BSE

  1. Mark your calendar to remind yourself to do your BSE regularly. This is a good way to prevent worry if find a normal cyclic change.
  2. Stay relaxed and breathe normally as you do your BSE. Becoming tense will produce some knots that you may mistake for something concerning.
  3. Report any changes or unusual pain to your doctor or nurse practitioner. Keep a log of changes, if that helps you remember.
  4. Remember to have an annual clinical exam and a mammogram.

Tips And Tricks

Windows Folder Extensions

Intro
Well you all know about file extensions and what they mean etc... But have you heard about a Folder Extension ? I suppose not. Windows has some set of pretty extraordinary extensions for folders, to mark them as something different. Read more to get what I mean...

List of extensions

  • .{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} Control Panel

  • .{9E56BE61-C50F-11CF-9A2C-00A0C90A90CE} Desktop

  • .{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} Recycle Bin

  • .{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} My Computer

  • .{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D} Network

  • .{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} Printer

  • .{25336920-03F9-11CF-8FD0-00AA00686F13} HTML Document

  • .{0003000D-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} Wave File

  • .{00022602-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} Video Clip

  • .{00021401-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} Makes it a file
What to do?

Make a New folder and name it something. Now when you rename add one of the following extension to it. (ie Append the .{XXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXX} to the end of the folder name just as adding an extension to a file) and see the changes.

** Try these on a blank folder or a folder that contains nothing important!

Tested on Windows XP, you are welcome to comment about success or failure on other Windows OS's .... This method can be used to hide/protect important folders.. ;)

Look after your breasts!

Recently I heard the devastating news that a close family friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer

They’d only just found it but had to remove the breast straight away. I’d seen her about a month ago and then, all of sudden she was in hospital bearing the scars of one of nation’s greatest killers. It hit home that breast cancer can strike anytime, anywhere and that no one is safe.

Latest figures suggest that every day in New Zealand six women are diagnosed with breast cancer and that around 600 women - that’s 600 mothers, daughters, sisters, aunties, grandmas, best friends - die from the disease each and every year.

Most people know someone who has been touched by breast cancer and one in ten of us nzgirls will be affected by some form of breast cancer in our lives!

Of the approximately 2300 cases diagnosed each year, one third of these will be in women under 50 and, startlingly, at least one will be in a teenager. Sobering thoughts indeed - but thoughts which instead of instilling fear should inspire action and awareness.

What is breast cancer?

breast cancer as “a malignant tumor that has developed from cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that may invade surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body”.

Our breasts are made up of lobules (the milk glands), ducts (connecting the lobules and nipples) and stroma (the fatty tissue) and most cancers occur usually in ducts and lobules. There are four different types of lumps that can be found in breasts - fibroadenomas, cysts and psuedolumps which are usually benign. These lumps are generally associated with your period beginning and an increase in tenderness and possible swelling.

The fourth type of lump is a malignant lump- and these account for one in twelve in pre-menopausal women. After forming in the ducts and lobules, the more invasive forms of cancer can spread to the lymph nodes and other parts of the body- in the space of months through to years.

What can you do?

Be Aware of the Risks
Considering over 90% of breast cancer patients are women - yeah, men can get it as well - the very fact that you’re an nzgirl puts you at a higher risk!
As well as being a member of the fairer sex, there are also other factors that can increase your risk of the disease including genetic, hormonal and external factors.
Previous family disposition to cancer is also a signal of increased risk, so be aware of family history.

There may also be increased risks associated with women who…
Don’t have children, have used oral contraceptives, started menstruating from an early age (12 years), have had HRT, drink excessively, smoke or obtain little or no exercise.

Clinical exams and Mammograms

This is where your doctor, a trained professional in spotting those lumps and bumps, performs a clinical exam. Younger women - 20-30 years - should incorporate the breast exam as part of a general checkup about once every three years, with the frequency increasing as you get older.

Remember though that all of these methods are not infallible - even Mammograms which are the best way of detecting abnormalities have a 10% failure rate due to the nasty cancers that don’t form lumps.

If you’re not sure get it checked out if something feels abnormal or ask for a second opinion. Listen to your body, trust your instincts and don’t stick your head in the sand EARLY DETECTION SAVES LIVES!!!

For more information check out the Breast Cancer Research Trust or you can support the trust by buying a special pendant from the Walker & Hall. The pendant, designed to look like a stylised breast shield, is made of sterling silver, with a sapphire in the centre and retails for $95.
