History of Valentine's Day

The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.

So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.

Year in Review: Robots Everywhere!

So a few of us folks from Nosedive Central went to go see "Bernie Mac" Rogers's latest, Universal Robots at the manhattantheatresource last night. This is not to be confused with 31 Down radio theater's production of a different play, also calledUnivseral Robots and also based loosely on Karel Capek's 1921 play, R.U.R.

I suggest you check it out, too. (Mac's play, that is. I haven't seen 31 Down radio theater's show.)

As is the case with almost all of his plays, Mac brings a whole lot of "meat" to Universal Robots, which is one of the most dense works I've seen for the stage since...well...his play, Hail Satan. Mac doesn't just dabble in ethical, theological, spiritual, scientific, philosophical and political themes throughout; he delves into all of them.

At once.

Thoroughly.

And I mean Thor. Ough. Ly.

Mac freely adapts Capek's aforementioned play, which introduced the word "robot" to the world, but departs significantly from Capek's script. Universal Robots tells an alternate history of the 20th Century, starting with the invention of the robot and chronicling the consequences of that invention and how said invention completely and permanently changes the world's timeline, and not necessarily for the best for humanity. Ulp.

In Universal Robots, a scientist (or rather, a scientist's wife who has gone insane and believes herself to be her scientist husband, but don't worry about that) figures out a way to make automatons, which tickles the imagination of the playwright Karel Capek, who has coincidentally just staged a play about introducing automatons into the world. Since Capek has the ear of the President of Czechoslovakia, he convinces President Masaryk to mass-produce these automatons to do the work nobody wants to do.

Then things go wrong.

Well..."wrong" isn't the right word. I suppose I should really write, "Things become inevitable."

It's part science fiction, part political allegory, part thriller, part redemptive tragedy, part spiritual parable and part historical fiction run amok. And let's face it: it's also part robots taking over the world awesomeness (a lovely genre).

Mac brought an excellent cast on board for this incredibly ambitious and fascinating show. In particular, Jason Howard as the simpleton waiter named Radosh who ends up being the template for Radius, the first robot, is amazing. He makes every line he speaks sound as if it's his own, even as a robot (when he plays Radius and first gets activated, I thought: "How the hell did he do that with his voice?").

Also thoroughly believable is James Wetzel, who plays the President of Czechoslovakia. I didn't watch him and think, "Well, he's playing that role effectively." I thought: "Yes, that's the President of Czechoslovakia."

Of course, singling these two actors out may seem like a slight to the rest of the cast. I don't intend that: everyone in this show is all very good and very believable.

I really could go on and on about Capek contemplating how playwrights engage in self-marginalization, President Masaryk stuck between the rock of wanting to keep Pandora's Box shut and the hard place of scientific progress being inevitable, or wondering if it's okay for pedophiles to molest or have sex with robots designed look like children (they're technically restraining themselves from hurting real children), but I'd rather let you see it all for yourself and not ruin it.

Seriously, folks. This play is brilliant.

eCoupled wireless power demonstration at CES 2009

The U.S. based company “Fulton Innovation” has developed a technology that enables wirelessly charging electrical devices. The company demonstrated a series of products powered by “eCoupled Intelligent Wireless Power” at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las-Vegas. The engineers behind “eCoupled” say that the technology, which has been under development for the past ten years, enables low-cost and efficient wireless energy supply, which can be utilized “anywhere traditional power needs exist”.

eCoupled relies on a well known principle of physics called“inductive coupling” – a process in which energy is transferred from one circuit component to another through a shared magnetic field. This kind of power transmission isn’t limited to physically connected devices, since the change in the current flow of one device is caused by the influence of the other device on the magnetic field between them. Fulton’s technology consists of an inductively coupled power circuit that dynamically seeks resonance, continuously communicating with a primary supply circuit, which monitors each device within its control range and supplies it with the determined optimal amount of power to keep it at peak efficiency.

The scientists say eCoupled overcomes the limitations of spatial rigidity, static loads and unacceptable power losses often associated with wireless systems, intelligently adapting to multiple loads – from milliwatts to kilowatts, reportedly reaching energy transfer efficiencies of approximately 98%. At the CES, the company demonstrated the wireless transmission of 1.4 kilowatts, which is the maximum power transfer achieved by eCoupled to date. The technology is currently limited to a distance of about 2 centimeters, over which power can be transmitted without interfering with other short-range signals.

At the company’s booth at the CES, eCoupled was demonstrated on a variety of devices. Fulton showed how a small cradle with embedded eCoupled technology could wirelessly charge any electrical device that was placed in it, such as a cell phone, PDA, MP3 player, etc. A similar device lighted up a variety of light bulbs, from the traditional incandescent bulbs to halogen, fluorescent and neon bulbs. The company also showed off its “smart” tabletop, which was embedded with eCoupled technology and was able to supply power to about anything that was put on its surface - from heating up kettles and frying pans to charging laptops and lighting up light bulbs by selectively transmitting the exact amount of electricity required by each of these devices. “We envision that this becomes ubiquitous and the standard for providing power wirelessly in a whole variety of portable and not so portable devices” – said Dave Hazlett, Director of Business Development at Fulton Innovations.

One of the core issues the company focused on during the development stage was the safety of such wireless communications. Fulton has developed a unique identification protocol, which has the ability to authenticate any eCoupled-enabled device within its range. If the “base station” does not immediately recognize the component, it won’t supply it with power. The base station can also determine whether a certain device requires power at all – for example, if a given component is fully charged, the primary power supply will stop the energy transfer.

According to Fulton, eCoupled can be applied to all products that require electric power. In fact, this technology has already been used in Alticor’s eSpring water purification systems, which use ultraviolet light technology to remove contaminants and destroy bacteria and viruses that reside in tap water. eCoupled technology helped eSpring engineers solve some of the challenges they faced at the time, including the unwanted heating of the water, caused by the ultraviolet lamp. The technology allowed for high-powered wireless energy transfer to the lamp, reducing energy consumption and ambient heat.

Fulton is currently working on a technology that will allow the base station to be incorporated inside a desktop, so that eCoupled-connected devices could be charged simply by being placed over certain spots.

TFOT previously covered other wireless power transmission technologies, such as the wireless charging pad invented by "WildCharge", and a wireless power transmission method that was developed by MIT scientists . Using this method, the scientists succeeded to light a 60 watt light bulb wirelessly from a distance of about 2 meters. You can also check out the levitating wirelessly-powered light bulbpresented this year at the Sonar Exhibition in Barcelona by artist Jeff Lieberman from Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Multi-Touch Running On Hacked Google Phone

Hacker Luke Hutchison has successfully brought multi-touch to the T-Mobile G1 Googlephone. The video shows that it's a rather clunky implementation right now, but as Luke points out, this is v.1.0:

This is a proof of concept, people — of course it will be optimized over time — the fact it’s not done yet doesn’t mean it can’t be or won’t be. Apple’s engineers were paid mega moola to implement their bling, I was not.

How does it work? Luke has patched the Linux kernel of the Android OS to tweak the (Synaptics) touchpad driver. As this is a software only modification, we assume that the abilities to sense multiple fingers are built in to the hardware already.

You'll also need modified applications to take advantage of the new multitouch capabilities. Luke has provided a browser, a maps application, a photo viewer plus the vector-style demo app you see in the video.

Best of all, you don't need to do any hacking yourself. There's a downloadable, pre-patched version of the firmware available, ready to be installed. Proceed with caution -- you could kill your G-1, although you'll probably be fine. Right up until you get sick of the clunky zooming and throw the phone out the window at least.

How to "hack" an iPhone in two easy steps

Just days after its release, the iPhone is already being “hacked” so that it doesn’t need to be connected to AT&T’s phone network, and it’s so easy, anyone can do it.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog’s iPhone guru Eric Sadun reports that by simply removing an iPhone’s SIM card, and replacing it with an inactive SIM card, you’ll have a “sixth-generation iPod” that allows you to access email and web via Wi-Fi, though obviously you won’t be able to make calls.

This “hack” still works even if you don’t have an inactive SIM card to replace the original card with, though Sadun says the iPhone “complains”. Sadun’s advice is to “Buy the iPhone using prepaid, activate, cancel, enjoy.”

However, before you follow Sadun’s advice, there are a couple of issues you should be aware of.

Buying a prepaid iPhone is not straight forward, since both Apple and AT&T really are pushing consumers onto two-year plans. Pre-paid iPhones are only available to people with bad credit histories (though Sadun offers a fix for this as well).

Also, there’s some talk that each time the iPhone’s system software is updated it’ll do a check to see whether the iPhone is actually activated as a phone.

Update: Hacker Jon Lech Johansen claims to have developed an iPhone activation server program. Warning - meddle with iPhone activation at your own risk.

Cyber criminals find new victims on Facebook and MySpace

Cyber crime has been in existence for as long as the Internet existed. Basically, as soon as people see a new way of conning people, they latch on to it. But, because most of us are used to the threat from phishing emails, and respond accordingly, binning the attempted con immediately, criminals are looking elsewhere for their victims.

There cannot be an Internet-connected person left alive who hasn’t received some form of scam, normally via an email asking for your bank details or trying to persuade you to click on a bogus website. Luckily, most people are now educated and aware enough not to fall for such scams.

This has lead cyber criminals to look elsewhere for their potential targets, and social networks such as Facebook seem to be the new platform for their virtual mugging attempts. The Sydney Morning Herald reports the experience of Karina Wells, who found herself almost fooled by a request from a friend.

On Friday, Wells received a message from a friend on Facebook asking her for $500. This friend was supposedly stranded in Nigeria and needed the money to buy a ticket home. After several messages back and forth, Wells realized not all was as it seems because her friend was using Americanisms such as cellphone rather than mobile.

Realizing she was dealing with someone who had hijacked her friend’s account and was phishing for money and her bank details, she obtained all the details she could about the scammer before passing their details on to Facebook and the authorities.

Wells’ friend likely had his account hacked or inadvertently revealed his login details by way of a computer virus, but once the account was compromised it allowed the scammer to use personal details against the victims friends in an attempt at gaining their trust and persuading them to hand over money.

And Facebook can be used by scammers in other ways too. A simple and seemingly innocuous message can be sent to a list of friends containing a link or video which when clicked on takes the user to a dodgy website. And Facebook isn’t alone, with MySpace users absolutely bombarded with spam emails and phishing attempts.

Criminals, including those of the cyber variety, will always try and stay one step ahead of the law and law-abiding citizens knowledge of criminal activity. With less and less of us being caught out by email, and spam catching software becoming more intelligent, those nice Nigerian con artists have migrated to social networks. I wonder how many friends they have?

Symantec has recently released a document titled Report On The Underground Economy, detailing a global marketplace facilitating the trade in stolen goods and offering fraudulent services. Symantec estimates that the total values of goods and services offered in this online community is in the millions of dollars, much of it offered by individuals.

The Symantec STAR team, a global contingent of security engineers, threat analysts, and researchers, gathered the data for the report during the one-year period between July 2007 and June 2008. The STAR (Security Technology and Response) team is responsible for providing all of the context which underlies Symantec’s security offerings worldwide.

The data was gathered by surveying the servers that support the underground economy. The Star team determined that the value of all the goods and services offered in the underground Internet economy was approximately $276 million during the reporting period, based on the prices of offered items.

The variety of items on offer was astonishing, but there were some categories that stand out from the rest based on the quantities offered. The largest of these is credit card information, which accounted for over 30 percent of the total on-offer value. Based upon the credit limits of the cards for which information is available, the overall value of this card information was over $5 billion. There are so many numbers available that they are sold in bulk, with bonus information offered on large quantity purchases.

The second largest category is in a similar vein: stolen financial account information, primarily simple consumer bank account data. This information comprised about 20 percent of the underground goods available, and was worth approximately $1.7 billion over the year covered by the report. According to the report, it is possible for thieves to draw the cash out of one of these compromised accounts in as little as fifteen minutes.

It is astonishing that so much obviously illegal information is available so openly. How is it possible for these individuals and groups to operate so openly and still avoid detection and how can we stop them? Stephen Trilling, vice president of Symantec STAR, answers this way: “As evidenced by the report on the underground economy, today’s cybercriminals are thriving off of information they are gathering without permission from consumers and businesses. As these individuals and groups continue to devise new tools and techniques to defraud legitimate users around the globe, protection and mitigation against such attacks must become an international priority.”

Should a Web site be held accountable for statutory rape?

The Internet is used in an inordinate number of different ways. Some people use it for research, some for downloading, some for entertainment. And some, well they use it in order to hook up with strangers for sex. And the price some pay for these services is more than just of the monetary variety.

Meeting new people on the Web is relatively easy - visit any chat room, forum, or message board and the chances are you’ll acquire new friends, even if they are of the virtual kind. It’s not that much of a progression to find people on the Web willing to sleep with you although I don’t know that from personal experience, just what I’ve heard, honestly.

Some Web sites provide a means to find new sexual encounters, acting as a kind of portal for people interested in hooking up with others. One such site is SexSearch.com, which charges its clients $30 a month for the pleasure, or pain depending on their wishes.

Obviously, you have to be 18 years of age or older to join the site, otherwise we’re looking at a much shadier and illegal area of the Net. The only ID check on SexSearch (at time of writing) is a checkbox confirming you are over 18. So not exactly hard to fool the system.

As Eric Goldman’s Technology & Marketing Law Blog details, this was a big problem for an Ohio man who joined SexSearch in order to find new sexual partners. Within a month of setting up a gold account, he had met a girl and reportedly done the dirty deed.

After a few meetings, things turned sour and the girl called the cops. The Ohio man was arrested on three counts of “unlawful sexual contact with a minor.” It turns out that despite telling John Doe she was 18, and lying on the site about her real age, she was in fact just 14, meaning Doe could be charged with statutory rape.

The criminal case was thrown out of court but the man’s name had been dragged through the mud by this point. So naturally, because this is America after all, the man sued who he thought had caused his woes: SexSearch.com. A District court had already thrown out the lawsuit and now an appeals court has done the same.

I do have some sympathy for this man, even though I may not personally ascribe to his means of meeting members of the opposite sex. He didn’t go looking for underage sex and the girl seems to have been a willing partner, or why else would she acquire a credit card and join the site in the first place? However, the Web site clearly cannot be held accountable for what its members do in real life, with the onus having been on Doe to verify the girl’s real age.

Weekend TV's Big Winners: Dancers, or, as they should now be called, Prime Time's Most Bankable Kind of People.

Last night's two-hour premiere of NBC's Superstars of Dance (10.5 million overall viewers, per Nielsen estimates) drew more eyeballs at 10 p.m. than either CBS' all-new The Unit (9.7 million) or ABC's all-new Brothers & Sisters (9.2 million). The latter show won the hour in the 18-49 demo.

Weekend TV's Shakiest Return: Oh, sure, ABC's Desperate Housewives (14.3 million) was down nearly 2 million viewers from its last new episode, but that's nothing—after all, excluding football, the series was Sunday's No. 1 show in viewers and adults 18-49.

No, the shakiest return was posted on Friday by NBC's Lipstick Jungle (4.2 million).

With its life on the line, the series added about 300,000 viewers from its most recent new episode. But, as reported by MediaWeek, in its time slot, it ran third in viewers, and fourth in the demo.

This is a story about how my PayPal account got hacked and how I got it back. I had an unlucky day but with a little tinge of lady luck’s blessings which helped me to get back to square one. This story gives a good advice for all the PayPal account holders on earth.

Day 1 - 8.30 PM IST

I just logged in into my gmail account to check the emails, I was shocked to see 4 emails from PayPal. 1. Password Changed, 2. Payment sent to some email address 3. Bank accounts removed 4. Primary email address changed. Oh my God!, I had $X,XXX in PayPal balance. While I was seeing these emails my gmail also got logged out. When I tried to login again, it did not. The hacker watched my every move. My primary email ID was the one which I used for all my business and personal contacts and it had 14000 archived emails and chat conversations.

I was feeling like blindfolded and left in a unknown forest. I just could not believe that this had happened to me. I had Norton anti virus + norton internet security and Spyware doctor, both of them licensed versions!! I know all about fake emails and phishing stuffs, I never clicked on suspicious links.

I realized that… “You are safe only if no one targets to attack you.”

After a few minutes, someone added me to Yahoo messenger and said ‘Hi’. I guessed that it was the hacker and it was. The very first sentence he told me was ‘Hi, don’t worry, you will get back everything within 7 days’ .. He told me that he was a good guy and this is the first time he hacked someone. He also told me that he was in real need of the funds and would return my funds within 7 days. I almost believed him. I told him to give back my gmail account and told him that it was very important to me, and to my surprise he gave it back. He asked me what password I needed for the new account and he set it. I logged in and changed the password again. I was happy that I got back my gmail but was still very uncomfortable about the feeling that someone had watched me for so long!!

I was late in the night, I was sleepy but I had to hold on. I backed up all my files in my iPod and did a system recovery. After 45 minutes, my PC was as good as new. I again changed all the passwords and got back to sleep at midnight.

Day 2 - 6.00 AM IST

I saw my friend was online. I chatted with him and told him the entire story. He scolded me that I have not responded in timely fashion. He was so sure that the hacker was no good and chatted with me to make sure I don’t call PayPal. The hacker did not achieve that but however he delayed me by 10 hours. I spent nearly 30 minutes waiting for PayPal representative and then some one showed up. I told PayPal, the entire story and they listened carefully. They assured me that ‘I will not be held responsible for unauthorized payments sent from my account’. I felt good but not very good, I was not so sure that I would get back the money. I did what I could have done and I needed to relax. I took rest from this issue.

Day 3 - 7 PM EST

I called PayPal again. It needs a ton of patience to get connected with them. It took a few minutes to spot my account. They told me that “Your fraudulent payments were reversed, did you check your account”. I just jumped right there and was so happy. But I COULD NOT LOGIN into my PayPal because the password was not with me!

I was not able to reset my password because the hacker also changed the security questions! They advised me to send all the documents and they will help to recover the password.

After a few minutes the hacker came online again. And LOL what nerves he got!!.. He asked me to send the documents to him because he said my account got limited and needs to be unlocked!! I refrained myself from talking abusive words and just managed the situation and logged out.

Day 4 - 6 PM EST

I logged in into yahoo messenger and I saw that the hacker had left me an offline message. Wow! he got frustrated I guess. He left me the PayPal email and password. I logged in and viola! I went inside my PP. Lovely moment it was.. The balance was intact. The four fraudulent payments were reversed. The account was limited though. I just printed the fax cover sheet and sent them the docs.

I got an email that my PayPal account has been restored. I immediately went in and sent 4 big payments to my friends and family members. I could breathe now again!

Now whats next?.. everything is back to square one! Now that I have learnt a good lesson. If we think something like “This can never happen to me” you actually attract that situation and within a few days you realize it… the dream comes true.. even though its a bad dream in this case.

I contacted me friends and everyone told me that I need to kick out Norton and Spyware Doctor and buy Kaspersky because thats what is best in the market. I went to that site and reviewed their products. They had anti virus and Internet Security 7.0. The anti virus comes inbuilt within Internet Security and hence its enough to buy the latter one. For one year it costs around $60 and for 2 years its around $95. I just bought it right away and installed it, activated it. Again I changed all my important passwords.

Bottom line: If you think it wont happen to you, one day it will happen, and you will think about the day when you thought that it won’t happen to you.

Now that I got my money back, but it may not happen all the time to all the people. You just need to be on top of it.

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Palais de Chaillot in Paris. The historic document, often labeled a "Modern-Day Magna Carta," outlines the human rights standards the UN believes should be enforced by all nations—among them "the right to life, liberty and nationality, to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, to work, to be educated, [and] to take part in government."

That day in 1948 could arguably be called the birth of the modern human rights movement. With widely agreed-upon universal standards in place, "atrocities" could be more concretely labeled "violations" and could be more readily acted against. States that have embraced these standards have, since 1948, observed December 10 as Human Rights Day.

December 1st is World AIDS Day. Established by the World Health Organization in 1988, World

AIDS Day serves to focus global attention on the devastating impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Observance of this day provides an opportunity for governments, national AIDS programs, churches, community organizations and individuals to demonstrate the importance of the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The red ribbon has been an international symbol of AIDS awareness since 1991. The Red Ribbon Project was created by the New York based organisation Visual AIDS, which brought together artists to create a symbol of support for the

growing number of people living with HIV in the US.

The red ribbon is worn as a sign of support for people living with HIV. Wearing a red ribbon is a simple and powerful way to challenge the stigma and prejudice surrounding HIV and AIDS that

prevents us from tackling the global epidemic.

According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 39.5 million people living with HIV, including 2.3 million children, and during 2006 some 4.3 million people became newly infected with the virus. Around half of all people who become infected with HIV do so before they are 25 and are killed by AIDS before they are 35.

In spite of the troubled times we are living in, there are still people who choose to be pragmatic and sensible, as a way of fighting the reigning hypocrisy of Catholic environments, when it comes to the battle against AIDS. Such is the case of Kevin Dowling, who, after being appointed a Catholic Bishop for the Rustenberg Diocese, 16 years ago, has visited the clandestine housing camps that are home to 100 000 people near the border between South Africa and Botswana.

Almost exclusively inhabited by immigrant men from Lesoto, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, this mining community of scarce financial resources, who works in the platinum mines of the area, has a very small number of

women, half of which are HIV-positive, driven to prostitution as the only means to survive.

The extension of overlapping relationships in this community makes it a playground for the spreading of HIV. The Bishop, conscious of this fact, and risking, in the very least, his job, seen as the Vatican, aside from forbidding the use of condoms under any circumstance, also claims it to be permeable to the HIV virus, decided to build, in 1996, a Clinic, that, aside from incorporating a school and a day care centre, also hands out free condoms, AIDS medicine and counselling on how to prevent the infection.

"Abstinence before marriage and fidelity within a marriage are out of the question here" he said. "The issue at hand is to protect life. And that should be our main goal". "They have to wear condoms and that's it.", Kevin says to whoever will hear him.

Transfer Rates 10x Faster with USB 3.0

Next-generation Universal Serial Bus (USB) has been pure speculation among engineers until now, but finally the veil has been lifted.

Intel Corp and Microsoft Corp, both of the US, NEC Corp of Japan, and three other firms have jointly standardized the USB 3.0 next-generation interface, achieving transfer rates at least ten times higher than existing USB standards. The six firms have created the USB 3.0 Promoter Group to promote the standard, and plan to finalize the specifications in the first half of 2008.

Several points have been revealed about the upcoming USB 3.0, namely (1) the peak data transfer rate is at least ten times that of USB 2.0; (2) connectors are downwardly compatible with existing USB standards; and (3) two new copper wire pairs have been added. Optical transfer will be added as an option for the future.

The maximum data transfer rate of USB 3.0 appears to be settling down at around 5Gbps. The target USB 3.0 transfer speed is described by Promoter Group chair Jeff Ravencraft: "USB 2.0 is capable of copying a 25-Gbyte high-definition video between equipment in 13.9 minutes, but it should only take about 70 seconds with USB 3.0." This works out at 5Gbps.

Engineers working with high-speed interfaces, however, seem to be quite worried about how radiated electromagnetic interference (EMI) will be handled with the 5Gbps data transfer rate. One engineer working at an electronic component manufacturer commented, "We were finally able to control EMI with USB 2.0 by using a variety of noise-reduction components, but it will be pretty difficult to suppress EMI at ten times that speed."

Send/Receive Lanes
The connector will retain compatibility with USB 2.0, which means that while the external shape is the same, five new pins for high-speed transfer have been added on the interior (Fig 1). When work first started on the USB 2.0 standard there was prolonged debate about whether or not to maintain compatibility with the USB 1.1 connection, the previous generation. In USB 3.0, however, downward compatibility was one of the first specs mentioned, and was assigned a high priority in standardization.

The higher speed was made possible by adding two shielded, twisted pairs for high-speed transfer, in addition to the existing signal lines: one dedicated to send, and the other to receive. Compared to USB 2.0, pumping both send and receive through one pair, it is much easier to boost data transfer rates. The Promoter Group refers to the specification as "dedicated IN and OUT lanes".

The transfer protocol has also been improved (Table 1). Until now, data transfer timing, or scheduling, was always handled by the host, which used polling to determine the timing for sending data to the device. In USB 3.0 host polling is no longer needed, and the sending device can freely set its own send timing. This slashes the time needed for polling (overhead) and provides a boost in transfer speed, while also contributing to lower power consumption.
The new spec also supports device virtualization. Multiple virtual machines (VM) running on the host (personal computer, etc) operating system can now access a single device simultaneously. Device resources in this case, such as storage capacity in an external hard disk drive (HDD), for example, are split, so that the VMs act just as if there are actually multiple devices.

Optical Transfer
Optical transfer is also scheduled to be newly incorporated in USB 3.0, but there is still a difference of opinion within the organization as to when it should be implemented.

Intel is eager to implement it, explaining that optical transfer will be advantageous in the future to achieve rates of 20 or 30 times those attained with existing USB. NXP Semiconductors of the Netherlands, on the other hand, feels that USB 3.0 should be created with copper cable first, leaving optical transfer for the future. Some people in the field have expressed curiosity as to why Intel should be so eager to implement optical transfer; there has been much speculation as to what Intel's ultimate goal is.

Intel plans to overhaul totally the architecture of the PC, including internal buses, over a period of several years, and industry sources have suggested that it will want to use optical wiring running at speeds of 10Gbps to 40Gbps. An engineer at a US manufacturer involved in developing the UB 2.0 standard believes that Intel is keen to implement optical transfer now because the firm hopes to utilize the technology in optical wiring in the future. Optical transfer is likely to remain an important topic at the Promoter Group for a while to come.

From September 2007 the Promoter Group began accepting "contributors" - corporations that want to participate in the standardization process (Fig 2). The USB 3.0 Developers Conference (a provisional name) is scheduled to be held in California this month (November 2007), with tens of contributors expected to attend.

Allison Stokke became an internet sensation just over a year ago just as she was leaving high school. She’s (obviously) hot, and it didn’t help that her event of choice, pole vaulting, is ripe for innuendo for all the online hornballs. She’s a champion pole vaulter who set the national high school outdoor record, and now competes at Cal where she’s in her second year. Expect to see plenty more of Stokke and her toned olive skin in future competitions, Olympics, youtubes, and sports blogs.

Allison Stokke was a standout California high school track star that became an internet phenomenon after her picture was posted on net. Stokke set a national record for pole vaulting with a mark of 13-7 in her senior year at Newport Harbor High School. Stokke is now attending University of California, Berkeley and is on the track and field team.

Tatiana Grigorieva

This Australian pole vaulter won a silver at the 2000 Olympic games, and looks very good naked (*cough cough* google images). After retiring from pole vaulting last year, Tatiana went on to compete in Dancing with the Stars and as “Olympia” on Gladiators (the Australian version of what we call American Gladiators). She has also appeared in international editions of GQ and Esquire, but best of all she is a picture perfect doll representing the land down under.

The biggest visible result of all this is the taskbar. The taskbar in Windows 7 is worlds apart from the taskbar.

Text descriptions on the buttons are gone, in favor of big icons. The icons can—finally—be rearranged; no longer will restarting an application put all your taskbar icons in the wrong order. The navigation between windows is now two-level; mousing over an icon shows a set of window thumbnails, and clicking the thumbnail switches windows. Right clicking the icons shows a new UI device that Microsoft calls "Jump Lists."
Jump lists provide quick access to application features. Applications that use the system API for their Most Recently Used list (the list of recently-used filenames that many apps have in their File menus) will automatically acquire a Jump List containing their most recently used files. There's also an API to allow applications to add custom entries; Media Player, for example, includes special options to control playback.
This automatic support for new features is a result of deliberate effort on Microsoft's part. The company wants existing applications to benefit from as many of the 7 features as they can without any developer effort. New applications can extend this automatic support through new APIs to further enrich the user experience. The taskbar thumbnails are another example of this approach. All applications get thumbnails, but applications with explicit support for 7 will be able to add thumbnails on a finer-grained basis. IE8, for instance, has a thumbnail per tab (rather than per window).
Window management has also undergone changes. In recognition of the fact that people tend only to use one or two windows concurrently, 7 makes organizing windows quicker and easier. Dragging a window to the top of the screen maximizes it automatically; dragging it off the top of the screen restores it. Dragging a window to the left or right edge of the screen resizes the window so that it takes 50% of the screen. With this, a pair of windows can be quickly docked to each screen edge to facilitate interaction between them.
Another common task that 7 improves is "peeking" at windows; switching to a window briefly just to read something within the window but not actually interact with the window. To make this easier, scrubbing the mouse over the taskbar thumbnails will turn every window except the one being pointed at into a glass outline; moving the mouse away will reinstate all the glass windows. As well as being used for peeking at windows, you can also peek at the desktop:
Peeking at the desktop is particularly significant, because the desktop is now where gadgets live. Because people are increasingly using laptops, taking up a big chunk of space for the sidebar isn't really viable; Microsoft has responded by scrapping the sidebar and putting the gadgets onto the desktop itself. Gadgets are supposed to provide at-a-glance information; peeking at the desktop, therefore, becomes essential for using gadgets

The taskbar's system tray has also been improved. A common complaint about the tray is that it fills with useless icons and annoying notifications. With 7, the tray is now owned entirely by the user. By default, new tray icons are hidden and invisible; the icons are only displayed if explicitly enabled. The icons themselves have also been streamlined to make common tasks (such as switching wireless networks) easier and faster.

NOW BE ATTENTIVE while I explain the highest kind of devotion.
One who constantly listens to my virtues and recites my names,
Who is firmly intent on me, a treasury of auspicious qualities,
Whose concentration is ever steady like a continuous flow of oil,
Who has no ulterior motive at all in these actions,
Having no desire for liberation in any form-whether living in my presence, sharing my powers, merging into me, or dwelling in my heaven
Who knows absolutely nothing better than serving me,
Cherishing the notion of servant and master and thus not aspiring even for liberation,
Who enthusiastically thinks of me alone with supreme affection,
Knowing me truly as never separate from oneself, not acknowledging any difference,

Who makes no false distinctions, realizing the universality of pure consciousness,

She is in Reality, the eternal Shakti.
Jung’s Collective Unconscious Mind is the Tantric Overmind

The Collective Unconscious Mind appears to me as a continuum, omnipresent, a universal presence without length or breadth…It holds, side by side, in a paradoxical way, the most heterogeneous elements, including not only an unattributable mass of subliminal perceptions but stratifications deposited during the loves of forebears who by their very existence, contributed to the differentiation of the species. Though in reality there is no bondage, the individual is in bondage as long as there exists the feeling of limitation in him. In fact, there never has been any veiling or covering anywhere in reality. No one has ever been in bondage. Please show me where such bondage exists. Besides these two false beliefs, that there is such a thing as bondage and such a thing as an individual mind, there is no bondage for anyone anywhere.

Jiva is Shiva
When in bondage, it is jiva;
Freed from bondage, it is Shiva.
Gnosis of the identity between the jiva and Shiva constitutes liberation.
Lack of this knowledge constitutes bondage. Each perceiving individual selfhood is like a holograph of the universal Self - the Cosmic AM - the Source of All. Thus it was said in Genesis, and in the Gnostic creation myths, that the human being is an "image" of God. Like the universal Self, it perceives what is around it and experiences that to which it is exposed. The individual self is like a leaf on the tree of universal Self. The leaf contains the same essence (DNA) as the tree and so is part and parcel of it but in another sense is an individual thing unto itself like a drop in an infinite ocean of Bliss.

It is within unity that each one will attain himself, within knowledge he will purify himself from multiplicity into unity, consuming matter within himself like a fire and darkness by light, death by life.

Light and darkness, life and death, right and left are mutually dependent; it is impossible for them to separate. Accordingly the 'good' are not good, the 'bad' are not bad, 'life' is not life, 'death' is not death.

Inasmuch as the deficiency came into being because the Father was not known, from the moment the Father is known the deficiency will not exist. As with a person's ignorance, when one receives knowledge, ignorance of the other passes away of its own accord, as the darkness vanishes when the light appears, so also the deficiency vanishes in the completion, so from that moment on the realm of appearance is no longer manifest but rather will pass away in the harmony of unity.

World’s Largest Military Hovercraft…

Here are the pictures, as well as a (Russian) video of World’s largest military hovercraft, called Zubr (bison). The Zubr air-cushion landing craft is intended to carry out over-the-beach landings of amphibious landing troops and combat vehicles, as well as provide fire support of their actions on shore.

The ship provides sea lift of materiel consisting of:

3 tanks of total mass up to 150 tons;
or 10 armored vehicles of total mass up to 131 tons;
or 8 armored personnel carriers of total mass up to 115 tons;
or 8 amphibious tanks.

To accommodate troops, carried in vehicles there are 4 compartments with 140 seats.

As an option, the combat material compartment can be fitted with removable benches for additional accommodation of 360 troops (altogether 500 persons).

How does a hovercraft work?

A hovercraft travels over land and water on a cushion or bubble of low-pressure air. A hovercraft has one or more blowers that blow air underneath the craft, which is contained by a skirt. The skirt that is around the perimeter of the hovercraft performs an extremely important function in containing the air cushion. By using a skirt, the amount of engine power required to lift the craft is considerably reduced and as an added benefit, extra hull surface clearance is obtained. The skirt is a long strip of material that is mounted onto the underside of the craft. When the skirt is inflated, it lifts the hovercraft. The escaping air coming from where the skirt touches the ground is what creates a friction-less cushion of air. Because the hovercraft has practically no friction, it takes little force to move the craft.

The diagram above shows the basic principle of a hovercraft. Air is directed underneath the craft by a blower, and the air that escapes out of the flexible skirt creates a near frictionless environment which enables the craft to hover. The craft can move forward and turn by using propellers to propel the craft.

Control deck: cubicle from which a hovercraft is operated.

Remote Control Hovercraft
Remote control cars are great and all but the only problem is that they are limited to the confines of the land. Not so with a hovercraft. No terrain is an obstacle for it. It can travel on land, water, ice, snow - no problem. Just like the real thing our remote control hovercraft is just as at home on land as it is on water. Its three powerful motors will thrust it along at 15km per hour floating on a cushion of air.

This is a 3D Model of the SH-96 Seair Commercial Hovercraft. This hovercraft is designed to carry 149 passengers, and will be the largest hovercraft built in the United States. The Military Hovercraft (LCAC) is 16' shorter than the SH-96. The first SH-96 should be ready for delivery around the end of the year 2003 or early 2004.

People that are time constrained can never relax. They are always in a hurry. Absolutely nothing has to be done to relax but relaxation is a problem. In the mind it is translated as if some effort is to be made. Language gives this appearance but for you to relax no effort at all is to be made. Language is a problem. There are certain things which language always expresses wrongly. For example, relaxation: if I say relax, then too it becomes an effort and you will ask, “How to relax?” With how you miss the point. You cannot ask “How?” Then you are asking for technique, and asking will create effort and the effort will create tension. You are the technique itself, relaxation is nothing that can be done, it is what you are. So to relax you don’t have to do anything at all, it is mindlessness. Mindlessness is not doing. Egolessness, relaxation is Wu-Wei. You can’t do anything. If you think you can do something than it is still ego. Don’t do anything, just relax and in that relaxation timelessness, is. A man who is very much time-conscious is going to be hurried in everything he does with the “time is money” mentality but if you just get absorbed in anything at all that you do than there is no more past and no more future and then love is because you as an I are no more and only the other is.

Most time-conscious people are power hungry people that are constantly striving for more instead of cherishing what they have. In not wanting anything you get everything; the inexpressible tranquility. When we were all children we didn’t really want anything, we were too busy playing, not really doing much, just totally absorbed in the moment. Returning to the child is taking on life in a playful attitude thus enjoying each and every moment; this is ecstasy. Ecstasy is our true state, it is infinitely powerful yet it is totally helpless, it is love. Love is the power but you cannot ask, “How do I love?” because you truly are love and in reality there is no I. No effort is to be made to love, it is total helplessness. In that helplessness, in knowing that nothing can be truly done is renunciation, surrender, total power, infinite pureness, compassion, Kali. She is the wave of life one must be carried by. Do not fight the wave, do not struggle against it but instead flow with the wave and in that flow, in that absorption there is no more tension because you are surrendered and it is in that deep acceptance with existence, that ineffable openness that you realize that you are just going along for the beautiful ride and that the wave in its entirety is one with the ocean.
